One of the best movies ever made!

When I first saw this movie I didn't think I would like it. I didn't think it was my "type" of movie. I was wrong. HARVEY will make you laugh and at the same time show you the power of kindness. JAMES STEWART makes you believe someone is there even know his friend is an invisible 6-foot tall rabbit. It is easily one of the best movies ever made! If you don't know what this movie is or haven't seen it for any reason all I have to say is "GO SEE IT!" Even if you don't like black and white movies, there is something in this movie for everyone. If you like drama, comedy, or just films that make you feel good inside this movie is for you.

MILADY AND THE MUSKETEERS (Vittorio Cottafavi, 1952) ***

Although I’m planning to make next month a “Euro-Cult” marathon, I chose to watch this very stylish Italian swashbuckler now to augment my viewing of Allan Dwan’s musical version of THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1939) since the former is a prequel to (and an alternate take on) the classic Alexandre Dumas tale. I’ve always been partial to spin-offs of famous yarns myself and, as a matter of fact, the film takes the viewpoint of Milady De Winter (where we’re even told of her life before acquiring that title). Dumas himself would utilize his famous Musketeers characters in at least three other novels – “The Man In The Iron Mask”, “Twenty Years After” and “The Executioner of Lille” which is what this film is an adaptation of and was indeed the film’s original Italian title (although it was changed internationally to make the connection with the popular swashbuckling classic that much more clearer); incidentally, back in Hollywood they were contemporaneously filming in Technicolor an adaptation of “Twenty Years After” under the title AT SWORD’S POINT with Cornel Wilde and Maureen O’Hara!

Vittorio Cottafavi is a prolific and largely unsung genre director with a distinctly pictorial style which is well in evidence here, right from the arresting pre-credit sequence that cleverly gives a foretaste of a crucial moment from the climax: the entrapment of Milady in a barn by the titular executioner and the four musketeers. Atypically for swashbucklers, therefore, the events leading up to her capture then unfold in flashback. The film proves interesting in both plot (a compelling and largely unfamiliar narrative laden with romance, intrigue and action – but where characterization is still given its due) and execution: Cottafavi’s use of shadowy lighting and mobile camera-work is particularly effective, while giving the whole a breathless pace.

Nominal male star Rossano Brazzi is belatedly introduced as the Comte De Fer who immediately falls for Milady (formerly Anna de Beuil and soon-to-be Duchess of Buckingham) and later pursues her as an embittered but dashing Athos of the King’s Musketeers. Sensual brunette Yvette Lebon is perfectly cast as the cold-blooded woman who escapes her life of drudgery in a convent by enslaving every man she meets including the executioner’s younger brother (Armando Francioli) who hangs himself in a prison cell when she abandons him for a life of political intrigue under the direction of Rochefort (Massimo Serato) who’s often bemused by Milady’s audacity and resourcefulness.

Jean-Roger Caussimon as the Executioner of Lille is the only man able to resist her and for this she demands Rochefort for his life. His lovely young daughter (Maria Grazia Francia) not only sees her uncle destroyed by Milady but also her own fiancé and, during the afore-mentioned opening, she herself is at the mercy of Milady’s dagger before the latter’s timely come-uppance. While Richelieu is often mentioned throughout, he doesn’t make a personal appearance this time around and, similarly, the other famous musketeers get very little mileage here (where D’Artagnan is, besides, unaccountably presented as both blond and fey!); incidentally, another peculiar historical detail is the English army’s depiction as a bunch of kilt-wearing Scots! The whole exhilarating brew is propelled by a fine score, alternating between moody and rousing, by Renzo Rossellini. Unfortunately, the VHS copy I watched (culled from a late-night Italian TV screening) suffered from yet another spell of distracting extraneous noise on the soundtrack!

Technicolor rehash of Deanna's "It's A Date" fizzles...

Sidney Sheldon wrote the screenplay based on an earlier film that starred Deanna Durbin, but this time tedium sets in rather early. In short, it's an uninspired remake designed to bring bubbly JANE POWELL, ANN SOTHERN, CARMEN MIRANDA, BARRY SULLIVAN and LOUIS CALHERN together for what is supposed to be a light-hearted romp.

For a musical, there is too long a gap between dialog and songs and none of the songs are especially memorable. The sets are opulent, the costumes are tastefully designed with no expense spared on wardrobe, and the color is splendid. But the story is the one about a mother and daughter actress team who are both in love with the same man, unknown to each other, until the plot complications are straightened out.

Whatever sparkle there was to the original B&W film has been dampened by a dull script, slow-paced direction and some coy performances from Sothern and Powell. Powell postures as a would-be actress but her artificial poses are contrived and obvious which makes Sullivan suspecting that she's a girl "in trouble" (when she's really rehearsing a part) seem a strain on credibility.

Both Sothern and Powell are given the usual MGM glossy close-up treatment, but the silly plot defeats everyone.

Rio is strictly a fabrication on an MGM sound stage. Only CARMEN MIRANDA's lively musical contributions make watching this worthwhile. That, and a nice, understated, low-key performance from the always reliable BARRY SULLIVAN saves the comic moments from being downright foolish.

Would Have Been Better with Miss Withers As Originally Written.

The original story that inspired this film -- "Loco Motive" -- was a collaboration between Craig Rice and Stuart Palmer, featuring her alcoholic Chicago lawyer detective, John J. Malone, and his New York old-maid schoolteacher sleuth, Hildegarde Withers; it was the first of several stories (collected as "The People vs, Withers and Malone") teaming the two, generally in ways calculated to enrage and/or frustrate Malone's Chicago nemesis, Captain von Flanagan or Hildie's long-suffering New York Homicide detective, Inspector Oscar Piper.

Presumably because of rights issues -- money, perhaps, though this could have been during the time that Palmer (due to a divorce settlement) was intentionally making as little money as possible -- The Miss Withers part was rewritten to eliminate her.

It wasn't till some time later that an attempt was made to bring Hildie to the screen on TV, embodied in the formidable person of Eve Arden.

Other than disappointing fans of Miss Withers or of the original story in and of itself, this is a decent enough film of it.

Great innocent fun

I love this movie - but then I loved the book "The Lawrenceville Stories" that it was based on. The scene when Dink falls in love is graven on my memory forever. Lively school tales of boys plotting, fighting, and finally making friends of enemies. Leo G. Carroll very good as "The Old Roman".

Much better then I expected. Really makes you feel and understand both sides of the argument. I highly recommend. I say A.

"I'm not selling them natural gas. I'm selling them the only way they have to get back." Steve Butler (Damon) is a salesman working for Global, a natural gas company. Him and his partner travel to a small farming community to buy up property rights in order to drill. When an objection by a local teacher causes an enviormentalist activist to show up things get harder for Steve. This is a movie where the trailer doesn't do it justice. I wanted to see it based off the cast but it looked a little boring. While the movie is a little slow moving it is in no way boring. The writing and acting is very good and the "bad guy" that Damon plays really makes you feel for him and kind of root for him instead of the "good guy". While the movie does get a little political towards the end this is not a typical "enviromental/save the Earth" type movie. This movie makes you able to feel both sides of the argument and almost forces you to pick a side. I expected this to be boring with good acting going in. I got sucked in pretty fast and ended up really liking this much more then I thought I would. Overall, much better then expected and I highly recommend this. I give it an A.

Bagdad on the Hudson

In a New York City hock-shop, Huntz Hall (as Sach Jones) purchases the legendary "Aladdin's Lamp", which had been missing from Bagdad. He brings it to "Sweet Shop" owner Bernard Gorcey (as Louie Dumbrowsky) as a gift. While polishing the lamp, Mr. Hall discovers its magic powers. Hall's first wish is for six malted milkshakes; although, lamp slave Eric Blore (as the Genie) suggests gold, diamonds, and dancing girls. Upon meeting Leo Gorcey (as Slip Mahoney), Mr. Blore must serve two masters. But, before "The Bowery Boys" can wish up a million dollars, criminal elements conspire to steal the magic lamp…

Once again, "The Bowery Boys" fight off the frequently evident (as recently as "Jungle Gents") law of diminishing returns. As usual, ageing "Boys" Gorcey and Hall make an unequal quartet, with David "Condon" Gorcey (as Chuck) and Benny "Bennie" Bartlett (as Butch) taking the way back seat. Still, the "Bowery to Bagdad" story moves well, and hits a few high marks. The "special effects" (Genie "magic" and a "ledge" sequence) are nicely staged, and add to the entertainment. Best of all is Blore's droll, boozy "Genie" - it's a swell career-ending role for the retiring Eric Blore.

Light '50s comedy

Loretta Young is a "Half Angel" in this 1951 comedy starring Joseph Cotten, Cecil Kellaway, Jim Backus and Irene Ryan. The beautiful Miss Young plays Nora, who by day is a very professional-looking nurse and by night a glamorous seductress. Apparently she has a split personality, and when her conscious mind goes to sleep, Nora's other personality wakes up and drops in on an old school chum who is now an important attorney (Cotten). Her mystique, her allure, her seductiveness make him crazy. Every time he spots the daytime starched nurse Nora, he happily approaches her and throws his arms around her - only to get slapped in the face. Nora is engaged to be married to someone else and besides, she has no memory of these nighttime escapades.

One of the reviewers on this site complained about the holes in the plot. This is the kind of film that doesn't hold up well under much - or any - scrutiny. It's a fantasy and has to be enjoyed as such. Nitpicking about how fast a trial is docketed and why someone receives a subpoena is like saying that tapping red rhinestone shoes together will never take you back home.

At 38, Loretta Young is absolutely gorgeous, as she always was and remained for the rest of her life. Huge eyes, a face the shape of a cameo, beautiful hair, slim figure - as if any of it is really hidden by a nurse's cap and uniform. For Nora the wild one, she wears her hair down and a flashy seafoam-colored dress. Which brings me to the film's color. It's very reminiscent of a Better Homes and Garden book from the '50s that I used to look at as a child - very bright colors and lots of them. I found the use of color in the film quite unusual.

A light comedy is strange casting for Joseph Cotten, but for my money, he pulls it off. This isn't a wildly funny movie, but it is an amusing one, and the psychiatric plot is in line with the post-war interest in the subconscious so prevalent in films of that era. This film takes the fluff approach, which movies like "The Snake Pit," "The Dark Past" and "Spellbound" did not. Loretta fans will love it.

Not great.

"Grounds for Marriage" is watchable but I also found the plot to be silly and just hate the sort of singing that Kathryn Grayson did in this film. If you like very operatic music, perhaps you won't mind it like I did.

When the film begins, you learn that Linc (Van Johnson) and Ina (Grayson) have been divorced for a few years and Linc is now planning on remarrying. Inexplicably, Ina wants Linc back--though exactly why is never really explored. In fact, it seems as if she wanted the divorce in order to follow her dream career--and now she is scheming to get him back despite him upcoming marriage to another lady.

In order to get Linc's attention, she pretends to have a throat disorder and they call for a doctor--and Linc just happens to be that doctor. Now any sane doctor would have refused the case and referred her on to another--especially since she announced that she's trying to rekindle their dead marriage. But he doesn't--and eventually you know exactly how it's all going to end.

Aside from the singing, the worst part about the film was Grayson's character. At times she was shrill and late in the film when Linc wants her back(???), she runs off in a huff--and this makes zero sense in light of her working so hard to get him. Overall, she comes off as petulant and childish and you have no idea why Linc would want her.

At the very best, this is a silly time-waster--a film to watch when you don't want anything intellectually taxing.

Flashback to the days of the minstrel show is actually pretty good for what it is

A young boy wanders over to an old age home and finds that all of the residents are former performers in minstrel shows. The old folks tell the boy about the grand old days performing and we drift back an witness what is surely an idealized mega spectacle of a minstrel show.

Mostly stage bound, it is a recreation of show after all, performance of a minstrel show looks like a huge Hollywood musical but in black-face. Its an interesting curio of the sort of thing that most of us have only read about, though much of the humor was cleaned up and became the basis of black vaudeville and modern humor so we've all heard variations on many of the jokes or routines. As filmed variety shows goes this one is one of the better ones I've seen, however as with most films of this sort the interest level goes up and down depending upon who is performing. There is a mix of black and white performers, the only one I recognize is Scatman Crothers. Since many of the whites perform in black-face some people are going to find this offensive. I wasn't offended because I didn't take it as anything other than what it was, a by product of a bygone era. While that doesn't make it right, it does put things into a historical context that at least shows us how far we've come. (The commentary on the VCI DVD seems to further put things into context) Worth a look if you run across it.

Nothing special about it.

It's just a rare war movie I am going to talk about. A Columbia Pictures product, with Sam Katzman as producer and Lew Landers as director. The "Dream Team" for this kind of film. An ordinary war movie about war in Korea, of course. The ordinary story of the ordinary American boy who wants to enlist in the Army to fight the Commies. He has a fiancée at home and goes to fight the enemy. He later meets another trooper whom he gets friend with....

The following is predictable, as you can guess. Sometimes boring, the battle sequences are just here to keep you awake, and mostly with stock shots. The last two minutes are perhaps a little poignant, and that's here you understand that this feature was no more no less than an ordinary propaganda film, to convince the American people that it was necessary to send troops in Korea. To preserve freedom.

The ordinary message we may expect in an ordinary war movie.

Does anyone know how this song relates to the movie?

Is there any documentation on the story of this movie. In other words, how does this derive from the 18th-century English folk song "Green Grow the Rushes" (?) Those words are sung in the second line of each verse. The first verse is, I'll sing you one O. Green grow the rushes O. and so on until the song reaches I'll sing you twelve O... it's a counting song, similar to "The Twelve Days of Christmas." In Kent, the movie's setting, some of the locals are "Lily White," though no reason is given by the movie as to how anyone earns that designation. In the song, each verse (after the first) has the line, "Two, two, the lily-white boys, clothed all in green O." But the original meaning of that is now a matter of speculation.

Somehow this film was made without the incessant tinkering for which David O. Selznick was notoriously famous, presumably because he had allowed his wife, Jennifer Jones, to travel to Great Britain and work her magic untrammelled by his day-to-day presence on the set and in the screening room as rushes were viewed. By all reports, however, he was so horrified by what Powell and Pressburger had wrought that what we on this side of the Atlantic were allowed to view bears only a faint resemblance to the intentions of those English artists,

It has been years since I saw, on a television broadcast, a no doubt truncated and heavily reedited version under its U.S. title, "The Wild Heart" but, as I had before, I was amazed at the "Archers" beautiful, almost florid, use of Technicolor and their apparently reckless disregard for the expectations of an audience weaned on American pablum and the more refined output of their English peers of the cinema.

Miss Jones is vibrantly beautiful and endlessly fascinating as she plays Hazel Woodus and it goes without saying that her support from a memorable cast of carefully chosen players, professional and, I would guess, amateur is of an order that one can always confidently expect from the British both on stage and on screen. It's wishful thinking, at this late date, I suppose but a VHS or DVD version, available to us here in the U.S., would be a remarkable addition to a movie-lover's library.

Love story.

Interesting as Louis Jouvet's last role on the screen;filmed by the same director as for "Knock" the year before,Jouvet's presence is the main reason to see this otherwise rather run-of-the-mill Romeo and Juliet version.

Two lovers (Daniel Gélin and Dany Robin )commit suicide because the girl's wealthy parents do not want their only girl to marry a looser.The movie is a long flashback,in which Jouvet's investigations alternate with rather vapid love scenes .Jouvet's scenes are by far the best ,because ,his genius shines everywhere.Outside him,two good sequences:the boy's father and his partner-played by an actress who apes Arletty as hell- visit the lovers and their vulgar behavior makes the young guy ashamed of his father;the conclusion,which contains a small twist-why did they commit suicide?Not exactly what we thought-. Dany Robin and Daniel Gélin will be both Hitchcock's actors,the former in "topaz"(1969),the latter in "the man who knew too much" (1956).
