Behind Every Great Man, There Is a Great Woman

In Chicago, the aspiring songwriter Gus Kahn (Danny Thomas) seeks out Miss Grace LeBoy (Doris Day) that works in a sheet music publisher and shows his lyrics expecting her assessment. The insistent Gus calls the attention of Grace and sooner she quits her job to help him in his career. They get married, Gus Kahn rises to the stardom and they have two children.

However, Gus Kahn loses his fortune in stock market crash in the Great Depression and the couple has serious financial difficulties. But behind every great man, there is a great woman and Grace encourages him to return to a successful career.

"I'll See You in My Dreams" is a delightful drama with the biography of the songwriter Gus Kahn and his beloved wife Grace LeBoy Kahn by Michael Curtiz. The story is very beautiful and Doris Day and Danny Thomas have magnificent performances and show wonderful chemistry.

The music score is fantastic and the moment when Gus Kahn sings "It Had to Be You" is heartwarming. My vote is eight.

A disappointment if there ever was one!

One of the great films of the war, "Mrs. Miniver" won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1942. In 1950, M-G-M released this sequel; "The Miniver Story." A disappointment if there ever was one! First of all, the first film was directed by the legendary director, William Wyler. This film was directed by H. C. Potter. No more needed to be said on that point! And since this is a sequel, why is there no mention of the Miniver's older son Vincent? (Played by Richard Ney in the first film.) It's as if he never existed. Both Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon (the only originals) should have said no to this turkey!

A definite exploitation classic

When I first saw this film I felt a sense of absurdity. It is a film that has close ties to both FREAKS (1932) and CHAINED FOR LIFE (1951). Same theme... what happens to the circus freak when he tries to live a normal life ? He is unwillingly taken advantage of. This time its the midget/actor Paul Dale that breaths life into a story where he is exploitet by some crooks that takes advantage of his size. The film does not take place in the entertainment business this time, but small town USA. We follow the day to day life of a midget that grows from child to adult. Many of the episodes in his life are very sad and depressing. But he is able to move forward and fights for his independence away from home. ITS A SMALL WORLD has a happy ending and love is found when he meets a woman his own size. Absurd ending takes place in a trailer where his new found love all of a sudden starts singing a song like she was in a middle of a musical. This film has to be seen to be believed. A film often ignored by lovers of exploitation films. Its worth watching, even if very slow at times, but like CHAINED FOR LIFE you might wonder if the producers of this film thought they would make money of this. I wonder if they did ?

Review :

Move over Hitch this is overtaking you!

When you see films of the caliber of 'State Secret' it makes you ask how the industry can 'loose' them for so long between the rare screenings! The credits for this near forgotten classic are masterful. Produced and Directed by the talented team of Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat (Hitchcock collaborators from way back) this has style that puts some of Hitch's films to shame. Gilliat also adapted the screenplay from prolific writer: Roy Huggins novel. The film moves along at a cracking pace, with a chase across many varied landscapes...night journeys on river barges, over deadly Mountain ranges, through city streets, etc.

The Director of Photography is none other than Award winner Robert Krasker ('The Third Man' - 'El Cid', etc) and assisting him is future feature Director: Guy Green ('James Bond' - 'Remo', etc) The look these professionals create together is first class. If you enjoy fast moving suspense dramas, tinged with wry touches of humour this could be waiting for you to discover (or re-visit)

Cast wise: Douglas Fairbanks Jr is surprisingly good in a mature roll of famous Surgon, framed by foreign agents to perform operation on 'mystery man' with dynamite results! In an early role, the astonishingly 'cute' Glynis Johns is marvelous. Herbert Lom is used to excellent effect as an international con man drawn into a dangerous liaison with the escaping duo. Jack Hawkins, as usual, is totally convincing as the menacing political manipulator. This film journey is filled with creative touches throughout. Find it on DVD (if you can) otherwise scour the TV Guide and don't miss it.

Gem Digital TV in Australia somehow dug it out of the vaults (they probably inherited it in a package deal without being aware what they had - this often happens) then screened it as one of their Sunday afternoon movies. As usual, they presented it in their throw-away, semi-unprofessional manor, with the way too LARGE, lolly 'PINK' station Logo running over the stylish B/W photography. Then proceeded to pepper it with gaudy colour 'pop up' adds, for shows that the audience for this style of movie won't watch in a pink fit! Don't they know...has no one taught them?

While at least they had a superbly re-mastered print with clear image and good contrast, they then ran the sound track through an 'auto level controller' (A.L.C.) so that during the films quieter moments the ALC unit goes off looking for sound that's not even there, leaving the viewer to suffer 'Hiss and Background noise' till someone speaks again. Pitiful. Oh well, at least they did screen it! Bless their little hearts!

Review :

rare little B-noir is worth tracking down

Low-budget melodrama with very fine performances, adapted by author Robert Abel from his own stage play, THE SAMSON SLASHER. Though it suffers a few minor lapses in character logic (i.e. one character reveals something rather devastating about his lover, but the next scene finds his lover behaving as if nothing had happened), the writing is uniformly sharp in the story of an amateur boxer sprung from prison who falls in love with the niece of the hanging judge who sentenced him.

Sheldon Leonard and Wally Cassel are quite strong in critical supporting roles, though lead actor William Bishop is a slightly flat cross between Frank Lovejoy and Rock Hudson. He pulls it off adequately, but it's the brother characters played by Leonard and Cassel who buoy the narrative, with the latter as a quite obviously gay, and spurned, boxing trainer.

A fascinating aspect of this film is its absolutely relentless final boxing match, where Bishop takes a pummeling not unlike the depiction of the LaMotta/Leonard fight in RAGING BULL where DeNiro's LaMotta refuses to go down. One has to wonder if Scorsese caught this rarity on late-night television and it stuck.

It's difficult to find information on this film but it appears to be in the public domain, so perhaps it will turn up as a bargain basement DVD. Particularly interesting to note that this is the sole film of stage director Edmund Angelo (who also produced, and cast his wife, Ann Richards).

They march them downstairs, supposedly to drop in the river, but actually leave them in a very nice jail maintained by Ed for gangsters who drop by to rub him out. Ed's problems include keeping Ruth, who has begun to like him, from finding out about his activities, increasing his family and keeping uninvited guests from dropping by.

Review :

Paul Douglas has tailor-made role in fluffy comedy...

LOVE THAT BRUTE is a comedy tailor-made for the unique talents of PAUL DOUGLAS as a soft-hearted gangster with designs on a pretty governess (JEAN PETERS) who's willing to take on the job of supervising his rebellious son (PETER PRICE), actually a relative Douglas gets to pose as his son so that he'll have an excuse to hire Peters. Price gets the most laughs with his tough guy lines, sounding an awful lot like "Lampwick" to Pinnochio.

For added amusement, JOAN DAVIS, ARTHUR TREACHER and CESAR ROMERO have some snappy bits of business--although the script never gives any of them the chance to really do their stuff.

There's some nice chemistry between Douglas and Peters, but they don't make a believable romantic pair and this has its drawbacks since the whole story concerns Douglas and his obsession for the pretty governess with show biz ambitions. He uses his influence to get her a job as a singer in a nightclub he owns--and the resultant musical number, while not exactly perfect, shows that Peters had more sides to her personality than the role really suggests. Good choreography makes the sequence amusing and pleasant enough to watch.

Biggest scene stealer is Price, with some sharp grown-up observations to go along with his tough guy facade. Story develops at a fast pace and leads to a good payoff for crime boss Romero revealed to be the brute responsible for a number of gangland deaths.

Summing up: Good mixture of comedy and gangster crime circa 1920s Chicago.

More than 'gets by'

Amazing how long it took for me to see this spirited 'B' Technicolor Fox musical on broadcast TV, having seen most of the other 'A' and 'B' Fox musicals of the '40s and early '50s. Essentially, a combo remake of the B&W 'Tin Pan Alley' and the Technicolor 'The Dolly Sisters', the latter being a semi-remake of the former, with 2 of the original 4 stars. Whereas 'Tin Pan Alley'is set just before and during the US involvement in WWI, the present film has a similar relationship with WWII. Both films turn into flag-wavers toward the end, as the male stars are drafted into the army, and the female stars conveniently go overseas to entertain the troops. In the present film, 'B' singer-dancers June Haver and Gloria DeHaven get a chance to shine without the dominance of 'A' stars, such as Betty Grable, Alice Faye, and Carmen Miranda. I thought they made a great pair of performers, whether performing singly, together, or with Dennis Day. In contrast to the legally blond Dolly sisters, the present sisters sported contrasting blond and brunette hair, foreshadowing the Marylin Monroe-Jane Russell team in 'Gentlemen Prefer Blonds', a few years later. The up and coming June Haver costarred with Betty Grable in 'The Dolly Sisters': a replacement for the retiring Alice Faye, who costarred with Grable in 'Tin Pan Alley'. In the present film, the sisters are much more of a sister act than in 'Tin Pan Alley', where Faye and Grable mostly did their own numbers. In this respect, it more resembles 'The Dolly Sisters', which was also filmed in Technicolor. However, the latter film mostly featured gaudy turn of the century costumes, whereas wardrobes in the present film were mostly kept relatively simple.

Bland William Lundigan, along with Dennis Day, replaced John Payne and Jack Oakie, respectively, as composer-lyricists. Like Oakie, Day contributes several songs, alone or with one or two of 'the girls'. Some like his distinctive Irish tenor voice, others do not. Very different from Oakie's vaudevillian style. Unlike the previous films, this one featured a variety of additional stars in minor roles or cameo, perhaps most notably Harry James(Betty Grable's husband), motherly Thelma Ritter, a young Steve Allen as a disc jockey, and vaudevillian-styled, tall and lanky, Dan Dailey in a surprise song and dance with 'the girls', near the ending. The latter was a toned-down counterpart to the memorable 'Sheik of Araby' song and dance number in 'Tin Pan Alley', which had rotund Billy Gilbert(as the sheik) performing with 'the girls'.

Dailey reportedly was perhaps Grable's favorite male costar, although

not having quite the looks of a matinée idol. Both this film and 'The Dolly Sisters' sorely missed the comedic and all around vaudevillian talents of Jack Oakie, as in 'Tin Pan Alley', as a counterweight to the melodramatic scenes. Even Clark Gable reportedly was hesitant to do a film with the scene-stealing Oakie. If Dailey had taken Lundigan's place in the present film and been allowed to participate in more song and dance routines, this would have largely compensated for the absence of Oakie. Thankfully, the present film was lighter on heavy romantic melodrama than the previous two, where this got tedious at times.

Haver, was kept under contract with Fox as a possible replacement for the older Betty Grable, while sometimes starring in her own 'B' films. She seemed to lack something exciting in Grable's personality and looks that appealed to audiences, and never became a big star, although quite beautiful and talented. She should not be confused with June Havoc, sister of Gypsy Rose Lee, who was a supporting actress in the very popular Fox musical 'Hello, Frisco, Hello', among other Fox films of the same era. Gloria DeHaven basically followed a similar path, although I found her quite appealing in this and other films.

The list of songs sung or danced to includes: "There Will Never Be Another You", "It's Been a Long,Long, Time","I'll Get By", "Deep in the Heart of Texas","I've Got the World on a String", "Taking a Chance on Love", "You Make Me Feel So Young", "MacNamara's Band", and "America, I Love You": the latter being the only tune sung in both 'Tin Pan Alley' and the present film, symbolizing the flag-waving orientation of the films.

Portuguese Movies

I've seen this movie around 20 times, i know it by heart, and every single time i watch it i can't stop laughing.

I am a great fan of the old Portuguese movies, i own around 27 of them, and i am never tired of watching them.

I like the comedies, like "O Grande Elias", "O Costa do Castelo", "O Pátio das Cantigas", "Cançao de Lisboa", etc, the historic ones as well like, "Camoes", "Inês de Castro", and the ones based on some Portuguese authors like "Amor de Perdiçao", "As Pupilas do Sr.Reitor", etc.

They are great movies, the humour it's the greatest part, because they were produced in an era that there was no freedom in Portugal, but even though we can still catch the meaning of some situations.

The actors were the best, i like all of them, but my favorites are, António Silva, Vasco Santana, Ribeirinho, Curado Ribeiro, Beatriz Costa, Milú, Elvira Velez, Eugénio Salvador, Eunice Munoz, Virgilio Teixeira, Maria Matos.

In my humble opinion there no movies like those, and even nowadays we keep using most catchphrases from those movies, the themes used in them are up to date.

Tomahawking History

The only thing the real Tecumseh and this film's Tecumseh have in common is they were both Native Americans. Following on the heels of the successful Broken Arrow with James Stewart and Jeff Chandler as The Apache Leader Cochise,Hollywood flirted with the Indian as A Sympathetic Figure for a moment in series of films of dwindling quality. Columbia got on the bandwagon with this non epic depicting the historic Tecumseh as wishing to live in peace with the advancing White Eyes. In reality Tecumseh led a bloody campaign that for a brief moment seemed to be on the point of keeping the Midwest Native. The Indian Wars East of the Mississippi were far more bloodier than the ones John Ford,Raoul Walsh and others portrayed for the movie going public. Anyway The Bad White Eye and the Bad Indian ruin everything even causing the scene from the Glen Ford William Holden western The Man From Colorado of a burning town to be used again. So historical no as usual, action packed in recompense, no. Worth a peek only if you need to.

Lost Volcano, The (1950)

* 1/2 (out of 4)

Third film in the Johnny Sheffield Bomba series finds the jungle boy becoming friends with the son (Tommy Ivo) of an animal trapper (Donald Woods) and soon the kid is kidnapped because a couple thieves believes he can lead them to a dangerous volcano where a buried treasure can be found. This third film in the series suffers from a rather weak and predictable story but also it runs way too long. Clocking in at 75-minutes that's about ten or fifteen-minutes too long as things get so slow that you really feel as if you're watching the movie and someone hits the pause button and keeps it on for an hour or so. As with the previous two films, this one here contains some decent moments and this includes the performance of Ivo as the young boy. I thought the actor gave a very good performance and managed to really keep the film moving at a good pace. I certainly think the film improved each time he was on the screen and there's no question that Ivo and Sheffield shared some nice chemistry together. Veteran actor Woods is also good in his part but he's not on screen enough to make a real difference. The same is true for Marjorie Lord who plays the boy's mother. As with previous films, this one here features quite a bit of stock footage of various wildlife and there's one incredibly freaky scene where a man is attacked by a large snake. I'll admit that I'm terrified of snakes so this scene was extremely effective to me but others might not see it that way. Of course, being a low-budget series we get some rather funny scenes including Bomba's first fight with a rubber crocodile and it looks even cheaper than what was used in all those Tarzan movies. THE LOST VOLCANO, in the end, really suffers from a story that just doesn't move anywhere and direction that just doesn't spark any energy or excitement.

Wonderful comic fun

I saw this movie several times on broadcast television during the 1960's. The opening scene of the stuck bells remains a truly classic moment, as are the references to the comic book fan club. There is a finely crafted mystery in the film. Carson's character is boyish and charming and appropriately dim-witted but lovable. The jackass adds a wonderful measure of fun.

This film really needs to be printed on DVD for it is a great film, funnier than anything Abbott and Costello ever did. They just don't make good clean films like this anymore.

By the way.. Good Times Video did release a VHS version of this classic film. apparently, fairly highly sought after as the lowest priced via Amazon.Com was $51.00 as of 2-6-07

Carry on Smuggling

I was tempted to give this review the alternative summary heading of "Lights In The Water Again"."Lights" was the pet name given to Charles Herbert Lightoller" ("Titanic's" second officer) by his colleagues.Kenneth More who played this role in the film ended up in the drink in "A Night to Remember"(1958) and here again he ends up there after a holiday couple James Donald/Jean Lodge ram his boat which also sinks. However the overriding theme was a forerunner of "Carry On Films" hence my summary title with a whole lot of improbable characters and situations. In the early post war years Britain was a very grey place in which to live, with food rationing, rigid control of foreign exchange and the excise duties levied on wines & spirits & luxuries bought from the Contintent.

Film makers, being rather romantic people at heart, have their sympathy with the smugglers who were given a rather heroic role.Other reviewers have mentioned "Green Grow the Rushes" & "Whiskey Galore" as two post war films which harped on this theme of romantic smuggling; after all Britain had a mountainous post war debt to repay (mainly to the U.S.A. which was not actually repaid until 1986).UK authorities had draconian laws against excise duty evasion, much to the chagrin of the general public.

The boy who played a cub was "a sixer". I could tell because I was a "seconder" cub in the 1950s."Sixers" had two stars at the front of their cap and led their patrol while "seconders" were deputies of the sixer and had one star there. The older boy scouts also helped to unwittingly transport the illicit cargo on the basis of "Bob-a Job".I kept smiling when Charles Hawtrey appeared as a dim laundry driver and the whole film appeared a softer, low key version of the "Carry On" films. This film predates the first in the series, "Carry On Seargant" (1958) by 6 years.I briefly noticed Wensley Pithey who played Inspector Charlesworth a 1950/60s TV detective. When the circus ponies (used for transporting the brandy)rested in a field there was a musical snippet of "The Post Horn Gallop", but how the principal characters obtained permission from the circus owners of the ponies was never quite revealed.

As usual in a farce about smuggling the authorities are always one step behind the smugglers but as there was also a moral code in films of this vintage, James Donald, Jean Lodge, Charles Hawtrey, Kenneth More and a local farmer have their comeuppance in court. However who paid their court fine was not made clear!I voted 6/10.
