If you look closely you can see the woodworm!

A below par British action thriller. I use both words in their broadest terms as what is supposed to be a chase across the Finish mountains turns into a nature film on the lives of the Laplanders for a large length of the film.

The lead characters deliver their lines so woodenly that if you closed your eyes they could be reading out loud from a drawing room in Hampstead Heath, so any attempt at pace is lost, not that there was much of an attempt in the first place.

If anything you have to sympathise with one of the villains, on the grounds that they want to 'get away from it all'.

Only worth while if it is on TV on a wet afternoon, when it is marginally better than watching rain hitting the window.

In a POW camp, the Nazis have placed the huts far from the boundary so that any escape tunnel would have to be a long one. One British officer has the idea of starting a daily gynmastics routine using a vaulting horse: they can place it near the boundary and start a tunnel from under it. He and two others do escape the camp by this means and plan to make for neutral Sweden. To do that, they'll not only have to move around without arousing any suspicions, but also find a stranger from a neutral or occupied country who'll be willing and able to help them.

One of my all-time favorites

While thinking of "The Great Escape" I allowed my mind to wander back to this little gem of a movie from my childhood. I had read and re-read the autobiographical novel from 1949 which inspired it, and when it came to the only cinema (we never used that word then , actually) in town that showed "foreign" films, I was first in line to buy my ticket.

As someone brought up on wartime newsreels and propaganda films during WWII, I had an avid interest in exploring the realities of that conflict as reflected in the memoirs and stories of men who were there in person. That extended later to a keen willingness over the years to buy any book on the subject, and eventually to read the equally compelling novels of Hans Helmut Kirst and Erich Maria Remarque, which provided an even deeper sensibility. The movie versions, however, were unlike this one in that they rarely delivered the goods.

The medium of black-and-white film has never been served so well as it was in those years. I have never seen any technicolor version of war that seems as authentic as do the deep chiaroscuros of films like "The Wooden Horse." If it is true that we are destined always to be captive to the images of our childhood, then I confess it freely.

And there will never be another the likes of Leo Genn as the emblematic British war hero on film. Not even Sir Alec.

Mine owner George Perez, transporting a load of uranium, is ambushed and left for dead after a fall over a cliff. Badly hurt, he makes his way to town doctor Frank Harding (Leo Cleary), secretly the boss of the outlaw gang working with a foreign government to steal the uranium,who poisons him and passes his death off as the result of an accident. Roy Undercover

The Cold War and the quest for uranium ore comes into the plot of this Roy Rogers western, The Bells Of Coronado. Roy plays an insurance investigator who is assigned by John Hamilton to investigate the theft of unrefined uranium ore and incidentally the death of the owner of a mine from where it was stolen.

Dale Evans co-stars and it would surprise many to learn that Dale was only the leading lady in about a quarter of Roy's films. The films that she did co-star with Roy are elevated an extra notch because of the obvious chemistry between the two.

Roy is undercover in this one working at the power company that operates nearby the uranium mine. The mine is owned by Grant Withers who is also Dale's uncle in this film. The usual kittenish banter between Roy and Dale is present which always makes their films interesting.

Clifton Young who died much too young plays his usual murderous villain. Film fans will remember him best from the Humphrey Bogart - Lauren Bacall feature Dark Passage. Young is always good in any film he does.

Why Republic was so shy in not coming out and mentioning the Russians is beyond me. They are referred to only as 'the other side'. And the chief villain is not one you would suspect, especially coming from a B western.

The Bells Of Coronado will have enough singing, riding, and gunplay to satisfy any aged front row kid from the time this was in theaters and younger fans as well.

Rip roarin' good Western, with lots of shootin'

Beautifully filmed, SuperCineColor production from Columbia pictures, with a good cast. George Montgomery and Noah Berry are ex-outlaws-turned-Texas Rangers, sent out to help round up the gang they used to ride with. Gale Storm plays a feisty newspaper lady who don't cotton much to Montgomery on account of he was with the outlaws who gunned down her father, the Sheriff, before Montgomery turned into a good guy.

Montgomery plays one of those a man-in-the-middle characters: he infiltrates the outlaw gang, but the Texas Rangers think he's gone bad again. Nobody believes he's a good guy except the lovely and faithful Miss Storm, after Montgomery works his charm on her. Meanwhile, the outlaw boss knows Montgomery is a spy, so they plan to kill him after he helps with a million-dollar train robbery

Action? Dern tootin', pardner! After being shot several times and almost falling off the train, Montgomery slugs it out with an outlaw for control of the engine while the rest of the gang rides alongside, shooting at him. The outlaw tries to feed him into the boiler! Montgomery wins the fight when he sticks the outlaw's gun down the man's pants and pulls the trigger! Ouch .. . ('This is for shootin' my kid brother in the back, you low-down varmit!')

Not exactly 'The Magnificent Seven', but good Western fun from the colorful 1950s.

VENDETTA (Mel Ferrer and, uncredited, Max Ophuls, Preston Sturges, Stuart Heisler, Paul Weatherwax and Howard Hughes, 1950) **1/2

Despite having been dismissed by the late eminent British film critic Leslie Halliwell as an "outmoded ethnic melodrama with nothing to recommend it", I had twice before attempted to acquire this (from a local movie-buff whose chief interest in the film was the presence of beloved Maltese character actor Joseph Calleia, here incarnating the chief villain) – however, both copies froze during the climax and would not proceed further!

A costly failure for producer Howard Hughes, this was actually shot in 1946: begun by Ophuls (in what would have been his American debut), with Sturges as writer-producer (he was contemporaneously engaged on THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK 1947, another troubled Hughes production); as it happened, the former was fired by Hughes after just one week (claiming his shooting pace was too slow), so Sturges was forced to take over himself. Eventually, he too was replaced – as was, for that matter, original cinematographer Franz Planer (an Ophuls regular) by Al Gilks. Hughes then appointed Heisler and, when he fell ill, editor Weatherwax was put in charge! Still unsatisfied, the producer brought in Ferrer (not yet established as an actor) ostensibly to reshoot the ending – but he was retained for much longer than was anticipated! Ultimately, while Ferrer received sole credit for the film, it is estimated that about two-thirds of the footage is actually Heisler's – whereas precious little survives of either Ophuls' or Sturges' input (even the latter's original script, which he singled out in his memoirs as his best work but also that it was "unproduced"!).

Similarly, this was originally to co-star James Mason (who eventually became good friends with Ophuls and made 2 excellent noirs with him) and Madeleine Carroll. Hughes, though, was afraid they would act his current protégée – the inexperienced Faith Domergue – off the screen and had them substituted with George Dolenz (father of Mickey from The Monkees pop group!) and Hillary Brooke (THE WOMAN IN GREEN 1945 being thus re-united with Nigel Bruce's Dr. Watson from that fine "Sherlock Holmes" adventure!). Incidentally, while proudly announcing the introduction of 3 new personalities – Domergue, Dolenz (playing siblings) and Donald Buka (as their servant-turned-bandit, forever accompanied on his exploits by future actor/director Hugo Haas) – the film's resulting lack of success stalled their star careers at the get-go!

With respect to the film itself, it comes off as an overpowering, indeed oppressively gloomy, melodrama; that said, the excessively dark and murky print I watched did it no favors at all! To my mind, the thematic intentions here were admirable – yet the background was simply too obscure (exemplified by the hilarious 'V For Vendetta' gesture!) for general audiences to particularly relate to. Still, the plot – of the new head of a Sicilian family being duty-bound to avenge the patriarch's death but, since he had been living abroad, hesitates to stand by such an archaic code – feels at once overly-familiar (interestingly, the film it most reminded me of was Luis Bunuel's underrated THE RIVER AND DEATH 1955!) and insufficiently compelling. The style, as I said earlier, is heavy-going despite undeniably atmospheric marshland scenes; another asset, then, is the effective use of Italian classical/popular music on the soundtrack.

Male Bonding, Film Noir Style

A common cultural theme providing subtext for many a film noir was the alienation felt by servicemen returning from WWII to a world that had adapted itself to their absence. But that theme usually remained just that -- subtext. Rarely was it dealt with as overtly as in "Backfire," a modest entry in the genre from 1950, and this fact alone makes this otherwise forgettable film notable.

Bob Corey (Gordon MacRae) and Steve Connolly (Edmond O'Brien) are war buddies, Corey layed up in a veterans' hospital recovering from a spinal injury, Connolly sticking close and providing him moral support. The night before Corey's release, while in a drugged haze, Corey receives a visit from a strange, exotic woman (Viveca Lindfors), telling him that Connolly has been injured himself and is asking for Corey. The next day, as he leaves the hospital, Corey is pulled into the police station, where the head of the homicide bureau (Ed Begley) tells him of the murder of crime boss Solly Blayne and evidence incriminating Connolly as the chief suspect. Corey sets out to find his friend in an attempt to clear his name, aided by his girl Friday, nurse Julie from the veterans' hospital, played fetchingly by Virginia Mayo.

What's most interesting about "Backfire" is that though the film gives both men nominal love interests, they're much more interested in each other than either is about anyone else. It would be easy to read homosexual subtext into this film, as it is in many films noir, but it's not really played that way in the movie. The relationship between Corey and Connolly is that of two men who have had to rely on one another in literal life-and-death situations and who now do not know how to rely on anyone else.

It was refreshing to see MacRae in a film like this -- I only really knew him from his string of 1950s musicals, and he equips himself well. O'Brien, a frequent presence in films of this sort, is right at home. And Mayo is a doll, looking for all the world like a 1940s version of Laura Linney. The climax of the film is a rote shoot-em-up, but as always with movies like "Backfire," the journey is a lot more fun than the destination.
