An undistinguished "Mark of Zorro" rip-off…

Despite some nice Technicolor cinematography and action scenes, MASK OF THE AVENGER is nothing more than a dull swashbuckler full of predictable clichés. The film, which is a Columbia Pictures production, is no better than their lackluster movie serials of the era. What on Earth was Anthony Quinn thinking when he was cast as the villain?

I can't help comparing this film to a far superior swashbuckler, THE MARK OF ZORRO (1940). The story is the same even though it is set in 1848 Italy, so there is nothing new here. The script should have included witty lines in order to grasp the absurdity and excitement of the story…however, there are none whatsoever and whatever excitement the story contained is thrown out the window. Although she can handle a sword, the blond Jody Lawrence can't hold a candle to the breathtakingly beautiful Linda Darnell. And John Derek is no Tyrone Power—his so-called "acting" and looks lack the charisma required for such a starring role and he speaks with a ridiculous, monotonous "Italian" accent whenever he places his black mask on. The Masked Rider is hardly a menacing presence, let alone an intriguing name. Even Cornel Wilde was a better actor than John Derek. Heck, even my stiff college philosophy professor is a more interesting presence than John Derek.

Even if you are an Anthony Quinn fan, don't waste your time with this boring Zorro clone. Please see the wonderful MARK OF ZORRO instead and watch the marvelous Tyrone Power flash his contagious smile in the role he was born to play.
