Boys to the rescue.

This was the first feature film by the director who would later give us "Il sorpasso" and of large number of very good comedies and dramas, often with the best of Italian performers. Before this movie, Dino Risi had made only documentary shorts, "Vacanze col gangster" brings together a group of young boys on a mission, to rescue a man from prison because they know he is innocent of the crime for which he has been convicted. The man is known simply as prisoner number 5823 and is played by a virtually wordless Lamberto Maggiorani, the actor who had portrayed the father in De Sica's landmark "Bicycle Thief"/"Bicycle Thieves." The leader of the little gang of five is Gianni, played by Mario Girotti, better known as an adult as Terence Hill, who developed a cult following from spaghetti westerns. The movie is intended for a youthful audience, and despite all its improbabilities, including secret tunnels, a note sent to the prisoner via a baked cake, it is really a lot of fun, and it reminded me of a similar young-gang-of-friends film called "Gli angeli del quartiere," and even of the American movie "The Goonies." Some of the plan goes awry, and when the boys succeed in extricating a prisoner from jail, it turns out to be the wrong man, an actual hardened criminal, the "gangster" of the title. How all of this turns into a salubrious conclusion and improved luck for the real innocent, Mr. 5823, is given to us in a contrived finale. In short, this is a cute film of no particular consequence, but with some pleasant moments involving the young cast who are on screen most of the time. I enjoyed seeing it.

The Governor of the Province sends Tremal Naik, a famous Indian hunter,on an expedition to end the savagery. slow-moving jungle melodrama w/Lex Barker

Perhaps the original color, Italian-language version of this film is superior to the black&white, English-dubbed version released in the USA by Medallion Pictures that I'm reviewing. I hope so. THIS version, which clearly was shot in color and then developed in black and white,looks flat and has poor contrast. And there is intrusive narration telling us the plot throughout. I don't know if this was in the original, or was added to keep the amount of dubbing down, with scenes of Italian expository dialogue simply cut out of this version and never dubbed. What dubbing there is seems minimal and flat, as many early 50s films seem to be. Lex Barker looks handsome throughout, although with the turban he's wearing, only his face visible through much of the film. What a change from a few years earlier when he was Tarzan and nearly naked through an entire film! All in all, the film is not very interesting. As I said above, perhaps in color on a big screen the location photography would be impressive, and perhaps in the original language the film would play more dramatically, but this b&w English-language version is only recommended to the most devout of Lex Barker's fans. Almost any Barker European film is better than this.

Best Egyption movie ever made

I have watched this movie maybe 20 times till now ,and every time i got out with the feeling that this movie is great , it gives you a great picture about Egypt before 1952 , The land owner that control the farmers (Basha) and treat them like salves , the killing circle (Al-Tar) that is well known in upper Egypt , and the love story that will never change with time , and the evil and greedy people that never get enough , it is all in this movies.

The uncountable number of stars with a very talented director gave us this state of art movie

My rate is 10/10 Watch it and then watch it again

On 30 September 1659, the aristocratic British Robinson Crusoe's ship sinks and he miraculously survives on a deserted island somewhere in South America. He retrieves a dog, Rex, and cat, Sam, from the shipwreck together with some supplies, weapons, clothes and tools and builds a shelter. He soon learns how to survive by cooking, farming, harvesting the crops. Then the loneliness begins to haunt him, especially after the loss of Rex. When he sees a group of cannibals in the island, tension and fear become part of his life. Later he saves the life of a savage that was going to be eaten by the cannibals; he names him Friday and they become friends. When Robinson Crusoe sees Caucasians on the island, he finds that Captain Oberzo was the victim of a mutiny and he helps him to retrieve his ship.

Bunuel's rare optimism

Defoe is not obvious Bunuel material in the way that Wuthering Heights is but the very tension between director and writer makes it the more interesting film. One scene especially should be viewed by anyone who holds that Bunuel's brilliance lies primarily in his surreal imagery marvelous as this. Crusoe in despair at his his solitude calls out 'The Lord is my shepherd' at the hills. As he he hears only the echo of his his voice even the lush tropical landscape appears to mock him. Once seen and heard(Dan O'Herhiley's voice is wonderful here) the VCR and DVD become redundant. The ending low key and unrhetorical is one of the rare moments of uplift offered by Bunuel. Relish it! Bunuel's adaptation of Defoe is one his rare films,others are 'Cela s'appelle l'aurore','The Young One' and 'Nazarin' in which some sense of optimism in human solidarity moderates the general bleakness of his view of the human condition.

Great war film

The Italian navy in the second world war, was strong and efficient, but somehow only had negative results to saw (good for us Greeks). But there was one area of the naval war in which the Italians were not only the first but also the best. The unorthodox naval war of modern times was their invention, and no other navy, including the British, was ever capable to match them.

This film, made only a few years after the real event, tells the story of the most famous and successful enterprise they ever accomplished, against the British navy in Crete, in 1941. We follow the training and the personal stories of the members of this group of special men who prepare themselfs for a most dangerous mission and finally we see the scene of the attack, very well made for the time. The film is patriotic rather than antiwar but since Italy was on the side that lost the war, you get to see a lot less propaganda than in the American films of the kind.
